Views

  1. The medias have to show their responsibility to the community more than making the news more sensation. If they sensationalise more, the momentum of impact will be much higher.

  2. I feel the media should refrain from glorifying suicide. The first news is more like a " do it yourself" kind of a report which gives a graphic details of what all they have done before committing suicide. The media is conveniently forgetting the fact that they are in fact providing a strong recommendation to the similarly situated persons to end their lives. There would be many parents who have lost their lone child, and almost all the students fear about exam results. By giving suggestive head lines and glorifying suicide , in a way the media is adding fuel to the fire

  3. these news are not only read by people who go through such situation, it can also open the eyes of people who are close (friends/relatives) to suspected future victims .May be it will urge them to spend more time with these people and help them pass through that phase of life.

May be its little off the topic- My main complaint about the media is in manner which they cover accident cases - if you all have noticed no media is brave enough to report that victim was not wearing helmet/seatbelt - may be the respect for the dead.the question is how imp is that ????!!

  4. " we need to recognize two hard truths .Firstly ,Journalists don't see it as the job to prevent suicide. They see their public responsibilities as being simply to work with in the law and to report accurately and fairly.Secondly we like it or not suicide is a news -and celebrity suicides are big news-and it is idle to expect the media not to cover them"

  5. It is true that it is idle to expect the media to refrain from reporting news of suicide but the media can try to mitigate the effect to some extent by highlighting the sense of hurt, guilt and abandonment experienced by those relatives and friends left behind. Maybe they had caring people around them and didn’t give them a chance.

  6. It is really traumatic for the survivors, the dear and near of the one who commits suicide to see the reports. This in fact stigmatize them.Needless to say that it can set a model for the vulnerable.Copycat suicides are common in teenagers. In the era of competition for viewership or readership, sensationalism is a rule.Yet we can influence some humane hearts in the field of Media. The idea is not to prevent reporting, but to report with less dose of sensationalism and with a conscious effort to see that the report does not push another human being in distress to suicide.May be report can include subtle comments on how this could have been prevented.I think it is possible for the creative minds in Media.Yes,it is possible.

  7. Media should behave in a more responsible manner while reporting such incidents. The mental agony of the loved ones could be aggravated to no limits while reading or seeing such reports in the following days through media.Even the near & dear ones of previous Suicide victims could be agonised time & again reading such news items in Media.

  8. Are we expecting the same media which telecast live, the 26/11 Mumbai incident in a manner which prejudiced our brave troops, to behave responsibly while reporting suicides? They are doing their best to sell themselves, and suicides are just routine news for them.
Organisations like Maithri can appeal to fora like the Editors' Guild to ensure that their ilk exercise restraint in reporting such incidents. The appeal can be backed up by some expert opinion ( from psychologists/ psychiatrists) on the effect of sensational reporting on weak minds prone to suicidal tendencies.

  9. Maithri is doing a good job by bringing out the possible problems which can be caused by Media if proper care is not taken while reporting such NEWS.
I would appreciate if Maithri would throw some light into those mass Murder and Sucide caused by depressed individuals in the USA recently. How can the society prevent such incidents.

  10. Many thanks for all the comments. We shall be looking into the issue of mass suicides (which is often a case of mass murder and single suicide) in a future post.
We do understand the compulsions of journalists. Our hope is that with sustained efforts on all fronts, including from the readers, we can introduce more sensitivity into the reporting. Sure, there is still some way to go.
